How a Custom Handmade Rug Is Made: From Design to Doorstep
Share
Every custom rug begins as an idea and ends as an heirloom. Handmade in Bhadohi and Varanasi, India, our rugs are woven to order in any design, size or material. Here is how one comes together, step by step.
01 Pick a design
Start with a design from our catalogue or share your own — a sketch, a photograph, a colour palette or a mood. We map every pattern to scale before a single knot is tied, so you know exactly how the finished rug will look.
02 Choose materials and colours
Next we finalise the details that define the feel of your rug: hand-spun wool for warmth and durability, lustrous silk for sheen, or a blend of natural fibres. Yarns are hand-dyed to match the exact shades your space calls for.
03 Weaving on the loom
Skilled artisans weave your rug by hand on one of our looms — hand-knotted, hand-loom or flat-woven, depending on the design. This is the slowest and most skilled stage, where thousands of knots build the pattern row by row.
04 Washing and finishing
Once woven, the rug is washed to bring out the lustre of the fibres, then trimmed, bound and finished by hand. Finishing is what gives a handmade rug its crisp edges and even pile.
05 Quality check and delivery
Every rug is inspected by hand before it leaves the workshop. We then deliver it to your door with logistics and installation, anywhere in the world.
A handmade rug is measured in months, not minutes — and in generations, not seasons.
How long does a custom rug take?
Timelines depend on size, material and knot density, but most custom rugs are woven over several weeks. We confirm a production timeline with you before work begins.
